Frequently Asked Questions | Florida Firearm Trainings
Firearm Instruction, Concealed Carry Licensing, and Defensive Shooting Courses Serving Palm Beach County, Broward County, and South Florida
Getting Started | General Questions
What is Florida Firearm Trainings and what courses do you offer?
Florida Firearm Trainings is a professional firearm instruction organization serving students throughout Palm Beach County, Broward County, and the surrounding South Florida region. Course offerings include the Florida Concealed Weapon License course, firearm safety and fundamentals instruction, defensive shooting training, private one-on-one lessons, and group training for families, businesses, and community organizations. All instruction is NRA-certified and built around practical, real-world application.
Who are the instructors at Florida Firearm Trainings?
Lead instruction is provided by NRA-certified Pistol Instructors with Tactical Hyve Level 1 certification, Stop the Bleed instructor credentials, and active USCCA membership. Instructors bring over six years of structured teaching experience alongside a professional security background and active involvement in the competitive shooting community including USPSA and IDPA. Co-instruction is provided by a certified Range Safety Officer and competitive shooter with extensive practical experience.
Do I need any prior experience to take a firearm class?
No prior experience is required for most courses. Beginner students are welcomed and expected. Every course is structured so that a first-time shooter can follow along comfortably while still delivering value to someone with years of experience who wants structured, corrective instruction. If there is any uncertainty about which course fits your current level, a quick phone call will sort that out immediately.
How do I register for a course?
Registration is handled directly through Florida Firearm Trainings. The best starting point is to call or text the number listed on the contact page. Course dates, available spots, pricing, and any pre-class requirements will be discussed at that time. Spots are limited and fill quickly, so reaching out early is always recommended.
Where are classes held?
Classes are held at partnered indoor shooting ranges and private outdoor training facilities throughout Palm Beach and Broward Counties. Training locations include venues in Lake Worth, Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, and Okeechobee depending on the course type. Specific location details are provided at the time of enrollment.
Do you offer classes on weekends?
Yes. Weekend class dates are regularly available and are the most popular option for working adults and students with weekday scheduling conflicts. Availability varies by course type and time of year. Contact Florida Firearm Trainings directly to ask about the next available weekend session.
How far in advance do I need to register?
Registering at least one to two weeks in advance is recommended. Class sizes are intentionally kept small to ensure every student receives direct instructor attention, which means available spots go quickly. Last-minute openings do occasionally occur, so reaching out even on short notice is always worth a call.
Is there a minimum age requirement for firearm training courses?
Students must be at least 18 years old for most courses. Students under 18 may be eligible to participate in certain supervised courses with a parent or legal guardian present. Call ahead to discuss options for younger students.
Do you offer gift certificates for firearm training?
Yes. Firearm training is one of the most practical and meaningful gifts available. A course enrollment can be arranged as a gift purchase for a family member, spouse, or friend. Contact Florida Firearm Trainings to set that up.
Firearm Safety and Fundamentals
Who is the firearm safety course designed for?
The fundamentals course is built for first-time gun owners, individuals who received a firearm as a gift or inheritance and are unfamiliar with safe handling, people who want a proper foundation before advancing to other training, and experienced shooters who want structured corrective instruction. There is no experience level that makes this course irrelevant.
What are the four fundamental rules of firearm safety?
These are covered thoroughly in every course. The four rules are: treat every firearm as if it is loaded at all times; never point the muzzle at anything you are not prepared to destroy; keep your finger off the trigger and outside the trigger guard until your sights are on the target and you have made the decision to fire; and know your target and what is beyond it. These rules are non-negotiable in every training environment and in every real-world situation.
What types of firearms are covered in the safety and fundamentals course?
The fundamentals course focuses primarily on handguns, specifically semiautomatic pistols and revolvers, as these are the most common platforms for concealed carry and home defense. Students are encouraged to bring their own firearm for the course.
Does the fundamentals course include live fire?
Yes. The course includes supervised live-fire practice on the range so students can apply classroom instruction in a controlled environment with direct instructor feedback on grip, stance, trigger control, sight alignment, and follow-through.
What principles does Florida Firearm Trainings emphasize in its instruction?
Instruction is built around five core principles that govern every accurate and efficient shot: stance, grip, trigger control, vision, and multiple target engagements. These principles apply whether a student is a brand-new shooter or a seasoned competitor. Identifying and correcting errors in these fundamentals produces immediate, measurable improvement.
Private and Group Training
Are private one-on-one lessons available?
Yes. Private lessons are tailored entirely to the individual student. Whether the goal is building fundamentals from the ground up, correcting a specific technique problem, preparing for a qualification or competition, or developing advanced defensive skills, the session is built around that student’s specific needs and current ability level.
Do you offer group training for families?
Yes. Family group sessions are a popular and practical option. Training together reinforces a shared safety culture at home, which is especially important in households with children or where a firearm is kept for home defense. Group sessions can be customized to fit the experience levels and goals of every member of the group.
Can businesses or organizations book group training?
Yes. Corporate and organizational training is available for security personnel, property management teams, business owners, and professional organizations throughout Palm Beach and Broward Counties. Curriculum is customized based on the group’s goals and experience level. Contact Florida Firearm Trainings to discuss scheduling and group pricing.
Can neighborhood or homeowners associations schedule a training session?
Yes. Community-level training sessions are increasingly in demand across South Florida. A session for a neighborhood association or HOA can be structured around home defense awareness, safe storage, Florida carry law basics, and hands-on fundamentals. These sessions work well as community education events for gun owners and those considering becoming gun owners.
Do you offer women-only firearm training classes?
Women-specific and women-friendly courses are available. Many women prefer learning in an environment tailored to their specific concerns, questions, and learning preferences. Contact Florida Firearm Trainings to ask about upcoming women-focused course dates or to arrange a private session.
Firearm Laws and Carry in Florida
Do I need a license to open carry in Florida?
Florida does not generally permit open carry for civilians in most public settings. There are specific statutory exceptions, such as while hunting, fishing, camping, or during practice at a shooting range. Concealed carry, either through the Florida CWL or under the 2023 permitless carry law, is the legal framework for most armed civilians in Florida. This is covered in detail during the CWL course.
What is Florida’s Stand Your Ground law?
Florida’s Stand Your Ground law removes the legal duty to retreat before using force in self-defense when a person is in a place they have a lawful right to be. It allows a person to use force, including deadly force, if they reasonably believe it is necessary to prevent death or great bodily harm to themselves or another person. Understanding the full legal context of this law is critical for any armed citizen and is addressed in depth during Florida Firearm Trainings courses.
What is the legal standard for using deadly force in Florida?
Under Florida law, deadly force is legally justified when a person reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to themselves or another person, or to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony. The word reasonably is critical. Legal training and scenario-based instruction help armed citizens understand how that standard applies in real situations before those situations arise.
Can I carry a firearm in a restaurant or bar in Florida?
Under Florida law, concealed carry in a restaurant is generally permitted as long as the establishment does not primarily derive its revenue from alcohol sales. Carrying in a venue that qualifies as a bar under Florida statute is prohibited. This distinction matters practically and is one reason scenario-based training that includes restaurant environments is valuable for concealed carriers.
Can I carry a firearm in my car in Florida?
Yes. Florida law allows a person to have a legally owned firearm in their vehicle. Under the 2023 permitless carry law, a concealed firearm may be carried in a vehicle without a license as long as the person is legally eligible to possess a firearm. The firearm must be securely encased or otherwise not readily accessible for immediate use if the person does not have a CWL. CWL holders have additional flexibility under Florida statute. These specifics are covered in the CWL course.
Florida Concealed Weapon License (CWL) Course
What is the Florida Concealed Weapon License?
The Florida Concealed Weapon License, commonly referred to as a CWL or CCW, is the state-issued permit that authorizes a Florida resident to carry a concealed firearm or weapon in public. It is issued by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. While Florida enacted permitless carry legislation in 2023, a formal CWL remains highly valuable for reciprocity with dozens of other states, documented proof of training, and eligibility to carry in locations or circumstances that require a valid license.
Why should I get a Florida CWL even though Florida now has permitless carry?
Permitless carry allows most law-abiding Florida adults to carry a concealed firearm without a license, but there are compelling reasons to obtain a formal CWL regardless. A Florida CWL is recognized through reciprocity agreements in over 30 states, meaning you can legally carry in those states when traveling. It also provides documented proof that you completed formal firearm safety and legal training, which carries weight in any legal proceeding involving a self-defense incident. Some venues and circumstances still require a valid license. Formal training is always the responsible choice regardless of what the law requires.
What does the Florida CWL course cover?
The course covers Florida firearm statutes and carry laws, the legal standard for the use of deadly force, Florida’s Stand Your Ground law, safe firearm handling and storage, handgun mechanics and operation, conflict avoidance and de-escalation, situational awareness, and a live-fire qualification component. Students leave with a thorough understanding of both the legal and practical responsibilities that accompany carrying a firearm in public.
How long does the CWL course take?
The course is completed in a single day. Both the classroom instruction portion and the live-fire qualification are included. Students should plan for a full day and arrive on time, as the legal content covered early in the session is required before live fire can begin.
What do I need to bring to the CWL course?
Bring a valid government-issued photo ID, a handgun if you own one, at least 50 rounds of factory-loaded ammunition with no reloads, eye protection, and ear protection. Comfortable closed-toe shoes are required on any live-fire range. Loaner eye and ear protection is available. Dress in layers as indoor ranges can run cold.
What if I do not own a firearm yet?
Students who do not yet own a firearm can still complete the course. Range rental firearms are available and factory ammunition can be purchased on-site. Taking the course before purchasing a firearm is also a smart approach since hands-on experience with different platforms during training often informs a better purchase decision.
How do I apply for the Florida CWL after completing the course?
Upon completing the course, students receive a signed certificate of completion. The application is then submitted to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services either online or by mail. Required materials include the completed application form, the training certificate, a passport-style photo, a full set of fingerprints, and the application fee. Detailed application instructions are covered in class.
How long does Florida CWL processing take?
Processing time is set entirely by the state and typically runs between 50 and 90 days from the date a complete application is received. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provides an online application status tracker. Processing times can vary and are outside the control of any private instructor.
Does a Florida CWL allow me to carry in other states?
Florida has reciprocity agreements with a large number of states, and a Florida CWL is recognized as valid in those states. Reciprocity agreements change periodically. Always verify the current reciprocity map through the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services before traveling with a firearm. Never assume reciprocity without checking the current list.
Can non-Florida residents take the CWL course?
Yes. Non-residents can complete the Florida CWL course and apply for a Florida Non-Resident Concealed Weapon License, which is one of the most broadly recognized carry licenses in the country. This is a popular option for seasonal residents, frequent travelers, and people whose home state makes licensing difficult or restrictive.
Is the Florida CWL course available to residents of Broward County?
Yes. The course is available to residents of Broward County including those living in Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, Miramar, Coral Springs, Plantation, Davie, Weston, Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, Hallandale Beach, Lauderhill, Tamarac, Margate, and surrounding communities. Training locations convenient to Broward County residents are available.
Is the Florida CWL course available to residents of Palm Beach County?
Yes. The course is available to residents throughout Palm Beach County including Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, Lake Worth, West Palm Beach, Wellington, Greenacres, Royal Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter, Riviera Beach, Belle Glade, Pahokee, South Bay, Loxahatchee, and surrounding areas.
Defensive Shooting and Advanced Training
What to Bring and How to Prepare
What should I wear to a firearm training class?
Wear comfortable clothing appropriate for standing and light physical movement. Closed-toe shoes are required on every live-fire range without exception. Avoid low-cut or open necklines as hot brass ejecting from a semiautomatic pistol can cause burns on exposed skin. A forward-brimmed hat is recommended for outdoor range sessions to keep ejected brass out of the eyes.
How much ammunition do I need?
For most courses, a minimum of 50 rounds of factory-loaded ammunition is required. For longer or more intensive courses, 100 rounds is a better starting point. All ammunition must be factory loaded. No reloads. Steel-cased ammunition may or may not be acceptable depending on the specific range used. When in doubt, call ahead and confirm.
Can I bring my own firearm?
Students are strongly encouraged to bring their own firearm. Training with the handgun you actually own and carry is more practical and more transferable than training with an unfamiliar rental. If the firearm is new or unfamiliar, that is not a problem. Part of every course involves familiarization with the student’s specific platform.
Is eye and ear protection required?
Yes, at every live-fire session without exception. Loaner eye and ear protection is available for students who do not have their own. For anyone who plans to train regularly, investing in a quality pair of electronic ear muffs is strongly recommended. Electronic muffs allow normal conversation and instructor communication while still protecting hearing during firing.
What should a first-time shooter expect walking into their first class?
Expect a structured, non-judgmental environment where asking questions is encouraged. Every instructor at Florida Firearm Trainings has worked with complete beginners and understands the uncertainty that comes with handling a firearm for the first time. The pace is set to the needs of the group. No one is expected to know anything walking in the door.
Pricing, Scheduling, and Policies
How much do courses cost?
Pricing varies by course type, session length, and whether the class is private or group-based. Contact Florida Firearm Trainings directly for current pricing on all available courses. What can be said consistently is that the investment in quality firearm instruction is one of the most practical safety decisions a person can make for themselves and their family.
Are payment plans available?
Contact Florida Firearm Trainings to discuss options. Accommodating students who are committed to training but working within a budget is something that can often be arranged on a case-by-case basis.
What is the cancellation and rescheduling policy?
Cancellation and rescheduling details are provided at the time of enrollment. Reasonable advance notice is always appreciated. No-shows or very late cancellations without prior contact may result in forfeiture of the enrollment fee. Life happens and communication in advance goes a long way.
Do course prices include range fees and ammunition?
This varies by course. Some courses include range fees in the enrollment price while others do not. Ammunition is generally the student’s responsibility unless otherwise specified. All inclusions, requirements, and fees are communicated clearly at the time of enrollment so there are no surprises on class day.
Do you offer a military or law enforcement discount?
Contact Florida Firearm Trainings directly to ask about discount availability for active military, veterans, and law enforcement. Serving those who serve the community is a priority.
